Reading Update: Page 1

What is everyone else adding on this bonus day? I'm, of course, sneaking some reading in!

The start of the Crimson Moth series, we've got a cat and mouse set-up with a witch and a witch-hunter.

Rune has to hide that she's a witch after they lost a devastating revolution and went from rulers to being hunted.

But even in the shadows, Rune tries to fight back by rescuing other witches. In danger of being found out, Rune decides to court the notorious witch hunter, Gideon, to gain intel if they're onto her.

Gideon has his own agenda, finding out the socialite Rune has her ships being used to smuggle witches to safety, he decides to court her for information.

They both think they're using each other, but when the truth becomes murky and feelings start to develop, there might be a new revolution.

This sounds amazing! But it's a duology, so prepare for that cliff!

Review: A Change in Destiny: Dark Choices

A Change in Destiny: Dark Choices A Change in Destiny: Dark Choices by Janet K. Shawgo
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I received this book for free, this does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review

“I think he is going to kill me or have me killed,” Charlie told her.

A Change in Destiny: Dark Choices was the story of how a woman can find herself in an abusive relationship and the dark choices that can come up because of it, with some serendipitous circumstances helping out along the way. Charlie lost her parents and then her relationship with her fiance broke off, leaving her feeling vulnerable. Even with her close relationship with her twin sister, Jon, a good friend to Charlie and her ex-fiance moves in and within the year they are married. Coming from a high society banking family, Jon soon reveals what's under his suave mask and Charlie finds herself slowly being isolated as Jon tries to ruin her relationship with her sister, friends, and colleagues.

She knew as an investigator there were no perfect crimes.

Charlie's an investigator for the Houston medical examiner, she has friends in law enforcement, is very good friends with the state attorney, and has a sizable inheritance from her deceased parents. I thought it was mindful to show how a woman who seemingly has all the outs and backbone, still could find herself into an abusive relationship; it could happen to anyone. The story relays multiple povs, so readers get more of a surrounding view of the world and it gets going right away with a quick look at the present before going back six months and showing why Charlie is now at a pig farm.

Now the games begin.

I'm not sure I'd tag this as mystery or thriller, the reader is let in on every aspect of the whys and hows. This also read kind of dry to me, there wasn't much emotion coming from out characters, when Charlie straightforward tells her sister what she plans to do, it's all so matter-of-fact for such a heavy dangerous situation. I would tag this a procedural story, as Charlie's knowledge from her job comes into play at times and it becomes a story of steps Charlie systematically takes to come out from under her husband's thumb, without consequences. The serendipitous part comes in when, Charlie's ex-fiancé who works for the FBI shows up, and Jon, along with his father and bank, are served warrants and are now under investigation for bank fraud. It brings some attention Charlie wasn't expecting at first but ultimately works, I think, for her betterment. The investigation brings in more procedural story telling, almost no emotion from Charlie and her ex in the FBI worked into the story.

I've read/watched my fair share of true crime and horror movies, so I can't say I was personally surprised or horrified by some of the events, but this was a story I enjoyed taking the journey. I would have liked a little less of Charlie Scooby Doo dumping it all on her sister how she was going to get rid of her abusive husband problem and rather went more of an engaging mystery/thriller slow revealing. The ending jumps some time with enough divulging to give readers an answer to Charlie's fate. If you don't mind less emotional and more procedural (with pigs in the mix!), this could be one to pick up.

Reading Update: Page 1

Thursday afternoon treats
🥗📚

Charlie discovers that her husband is not only cheating on her but has a plan to kill her and get inheritance.

Turning to her identical twin Dani for help, they try to stay one step ahead of the husband and a former fiancée FBI agent that is now investigating Charlie's husband for bank fraud.

The synopsis talks about using an outhouse and pig farm to stay one step ahead?? Y'all, this could be one wild ride of deception and danger!

#TBRChallenge Review: Pack Challenge

Pack Challenge Pack Challenge by Shelly Laurenston
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

2.5 stars

*This is a #TBRChallenge review, there will be spoilers, I don't spoil everything but enough, because I treat these reviews as a bookclub discussion.

Sara took a large, dramatic breath. “I am a werewolf then?”
Zach looked at her as if she were insane. “There’s no such thing as werewolves.”
Sara stood up, her aggression coming off her in waves. She could feel it. “Then what the hell are you?”
“A shapeshifter!” He snapped back. He seemed truly insulted

This month's #TBRChallenge prompt was Furry Friends and I know you all yawned and said Whiskey's reading about doggos. HA! What could be more Furry Friends than two werewolves shapeshifter wolves banging it out.

I wish it was 2008 because then I could just say, “Samhain supernatural published romance” and everyone would instantly have a fairly good idea what I mean by tone, story, and characters. This is quintessential Samhain published romance to me. It's wild, fun, side-eyeing, sexy, and two wheels off the rails.

Readers come into the story as Zach enters a bar in nowhere Texas. There he eavesdrops on two women behind the bar who are discussing their drunk friend Sara. Zach finds Sara on the dance floor and seeing her scarred face and limp, identifies her as who he's looking for. When he rescues her outside from some dudes up to no good and Sara rewards him with pushing him up against the wall and trying to go to town but her friends intervene and drag her away. The beginning is fast, wild, 2006 in the way only 2006 can be with female relationships “You bitch” this and “You bitch” that, and mystery intriguing with Zach having elongating canines and talking on the phone to someone saying “I found her but the others have to.”

The story develops with readers eventually learning that Sara's parents were shapeshifter wolves but her mom attacked and killed a shapeshifter lion and that lead to her mom and dad being killed, and Sara severely injured in the attack. Sara was taken by her grandmother to raise as a baby and because her grandmother hated shapeshifters, Sara never learned of her heritage and ability. However, Sara works for a shapeshifter wolf and has been watched over. Zach's pack has decided to search for Sara after all these years because the current alpha female senses Zach is going to make a play for alpha and she likes her power and doesn't want to be pushed aside, so she decides to busy Zach with this assignment.

Zach and Sara have fated mates going on and Sara gets horny as hell whenever he's in the vicinity. This is tagged as erotic and with the story being short and the sex scenes and focus on Sara's aggressive horniness, yeah. Sara and her friends get invited to a rave the visiting shapeshifters are having (did I say two wheels off, excuse me, three) and even though Zach isn't supposed to clue Sara in yet, they end up in a tool shed and he heals her decades long extremely painful leg injury by scratching her (something about bleeding the poison out lol). This also triggers her shifting abilities and suddenly Sara's communication with true blood wolves (I laughed so hard at the snooty true blood wolves making a distinction) makes sense and Sara, for the most part, shrugs and is like, “cool, I'm a shapeshifting wolf.” It's really not mean that I was laughing at parts in this book, the story tone recognizes how crazy this all is and had some really funny parts:
“Whatever. But he’s one of several. Like the guy’s at the club that first night I was here. He’s Pride.”
“You mean proud.”
There was that sigh again. “I mean he’s Pride.” That stated through gritted teeth.
“Pride? Lions have prides.”
“Yup.” Sara spun around. “There are lions too?”
Patient Zach made an entrance. “Yes. And tigers. And mountain lions. There’s an array of shifters.”
“Bunnies?” Sara watched him swallow.
“No bunnies.” That through clenched teeth. “Think predators. Our ancestors became one with the predators. Bunnies are low on the food chain.”
“Sharks?”
“What?!”
“Don’t get huffy. They’re the ultimate killing machine.”
“I can’t have this conversation.” He leaned against the bathroom wall.

I know there has to be shapeshifting shark romances out there in the year 2024.

The story ends with some dog and cat fighting, Sara and Zach marking each other to lustily HEA, and moving to CA to alpha the Magnus Pack. Sara's friends are obviously set-up to continue the story (apparently I read the third book of this series in 2010???) and series.

The romance was lusting, if not deeply loving, the story was supernatural clinging to rails, some of the dialogue was 2006 cringe, but it all came in a short, wild, lively, and pretty good funny moments package.

Review: The Summer Book Club

The Summer Book Club The Summer Book Club by Susan Mallery
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I received this book for free, this does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review

The Summer Book Club follows three women navigating life after losing love and working to keep avoiding it but getting their second chances anyway. Friends since childhood, Laurel and Paris, are in their late thirties, divorced, and trying to keep their businesses running and successful, while late twenties newcomer from the East Coast, Cassie, is fighting being thrown out of the nest for the first time. This leaned a little more towards women's fiction but the romance interests make their appearances around the 25% mark (a little later for Cassie) and flutter in and out enough to give a secondary tag of romance. This was all closed door scenes, they passionately kiss but then are “waking” up in bed after having their world rocked ten/twenty minutes later. I also thought there was an underlying tone of conservative intimacy, the “save it for someone special” idealism that felt a little icky to me but your mileage may vary. The book club aspect wasn't really included, worked to get Cassie in the group and the men later join but it really only added some fun little shout-outs to books of yore, MacKenzie's Mountain by Linda Howard; Knight of Shining Armour by Jude Deveraux; The Endearment by LaVyrle Spencer; and Night into Day by Sandra Canfield.

No more guys, she vowed. No more love. No more being stupid.

Laurel has been divorced for a year after her husband drained their bank accounts and left to start a rafting company in Jamaica. She's been stressed to say the least as she tries to keep her thrifting business, searching for low priced items at Goodwill, estate sales, etc. to up-sale on Ebay, and raise her two pre-teen daughters. She's called into the school where a teacher tells her that her oldest daughter has been saying man hating comments and Laurel realizes that her bitterness has bled over into her daughter and it's time to find some positive male role models for her girls. With some serendipitous help, she keeps running into a sound engineer named Colton and dumps her story on him and he agrees to be “just” friends with her. They, oops, have some of that not shown bedroom mind-blowing but it's back to “just” friends, until Colton's parents are visiting and then a fake-dating situationship happens.

This was probably the most emotional story, but it wasn't to do with the romance, one of Laurel's daughters is hurt and angry about their father abandoning them and them being extremely flaky while the younger daughter loves him and begs and cries for any crumbs from him. It was hurtful to see how this kind of dynamic can hurt family members individually and the family unit.

She wasn’t who she had been.

Paris' story will probably be the one most people have the hardest connecting with, she's been divorced for a little under ten years after her husband walked out without saying a word to her. Paris grew-up with an abusive mom and carried those learned traits into her marriage, letting her anger control her and was not only emotionally abusive, yelling constantly at her husband, but also physical, throwing things at him and slapping him. It was great that Paris didn't excuse her behavior before she got therapy but the keeping of bringing up scenes where she was physically abusive to her husband did kill a lot of the romance genre feelings trying to come through. Her ex comes back to town to help his mother recover from knee surgery and she learns that his wife and mother to his son died of cancer a year ago.

I probably could have made an effort to connect with this story more if the ex-husband had shown any strength in being hurt or mad over how Paris treated him during their marriage, but he pretty much shrugs it all off and thinks more about how it was wrong of him to just walk away and not speak to her. He also shows no concern over leaving his son with her to babysit, saying he “trusts” her. Good, great but she was physically abusive with you and even though she says she went to therapy and seems calm in the two/three limited times you've been around her, should you immediately trust her around a child? This is where the focus on women's fiction hurt this story, the ex was pretty much an empty vessel to just be Paris' second chance and without his character depth, the redemption after she dealt with her anger issues did not feel satisfactory.

Why did she pick loser guys she helped get back on their feet who then left her?

Cassie's story was the most interesting to me but there was some thrown out there little wildness to it. Her parents died when she was fourteen and even though she had two older siblings, her uncle came and took care of her until she was eighteen. She never got to really deal with her grief and as a consequence, she is always focused on keeping everyone around her happy and keeps her relationships light because she thinks they're going to end anyway. Her siblings see that she is stalling her life to help them out and decide to kick her out and get her to go visit the land in California her uncle left her. Cassie's hurt and doesn't want to go but when she arrives, she gets a job at a bookstore and starts to fall in love with the land and small orchard her uncle left her.

This story has a, brought up over and over again, insanely handsome archaeologist that is excavating on Cassie's land because a matriarchal society lived there long ago, cave drawings newly discovered by Cassie (brought up once and never again), gold mine find of hidden cognac barrels, and a random old guy neighbor that knows all about orchards and wants nothing in life more than to help Cassie learn how to bring back to life and take care of her newly inherited one. The insanely handsome archaeologist also has some love of first sight but when he asks out Cassie, she laughs and leaves, thinking there's no way he'd actually be interested in her. Anyway, Cassie learns to live life for herself, not be afraid of some impending doom, and accept love from an insanely handsome archaeologist.

I liked how the women's lives all intertwined with each other but the romances were definitely weaker as the men were all pretty empty vessels who only seemed capable of spouting therapy perfect emotions and relationship conversations.

Reading Update: Page 1

It's cold and blustery out, why not escape to the summer?

Three friends try to escape the chaos of every day by making their book club nothing but heart bursting reads.

Laurel's hoping her attitude towards men hasn't scarred her daughters, Cassie can't stop falling for man-boys, and Paris still regrets chasing off the man who could have been the one.

These book club members are hoping their support for one another will help them take the big chances in life that could finally lead them to happiness.

Review: Tales of the Celestial Kingdom

Tales of the Celestial Kingdom Tales of the Celestial Kingdom by Sue Lynn Tan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received this book for free, this does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review

Tales of the Celestial Kingdom is a compilation of short stories set before, during, and after the first two books in the Celestial Kingdom series. Separated into three parts, Dusk – prequel, Twilight – expands relationships in first book, and Dawn – set after second book, the short stories re-imagine myths and are from different character point-of-views. As I've not read the series yet, I only read the Dusk prequel section to begin my journey into this world. I plan on coming back and updating this review as I read each section as I make my way through the series.

Dusk

He was a hero of the people, a legend of our realm...but for today, I just wanted him to be my husband.

If you have already read the first book in the series, Daughter of the Moon Goddess, you'll soon realize that this is the re-imaging of the Chinese myth the ten Sunbirds and is about the parents of Xingyin, the female lead character of DOTMG. Switching from both Chang'e and Houyi's povs, readers learn that the land is on fire and dying because all ten of the Sunbirds have decided to stay risen in the sky. Houyi is the Emperor's General and thus, taxed with getting the Sunbirds to set. Chang'e is pregnant and not wanting Houyi to leave her and possibly die.

Houyi was visited in a dream and given an amulet to protect himself but he still is leery of taking on the gods. We travel with him as he confronts the Sunbirds, who at first come off as unruly adolescents. Things don't quite go as Houyi wanted but the land is given reprieve and returns to one Sunbird that rises and falls. He returns home a hero and is gifted an elixir of immortality.

Months later we return to a Chang'e who's about to give birth a month early and all alone at the moment. Panicking she ends up taking the elixir, giving herself and her daughter immortality while leaving behind a betrayed look on his face Houyi, as she ascends to the heavens to be with the other immortals.

There were three illustrations that complimented the story and helped readers to visualize the world. For a story only around forty pages, the emotions, the love between Chang'e and Houyi, was intensely felt. I was drawn into this mythological world and after reading about Xingyin's origins, I can't wait to start her book.

Reading Update: Page 1

Have a long weekend and starting it off right, reading!

The Celestial Kingdom duology gets expanded with this new compilation of stories that take place around the two books with new stories from multiple characters' perspectives.

This world takes place in the Immortal Realm with gods, magic, danger, and love.

How fascinating and engrossing does this all sound?!
Anyone read this duology yet?

I used Stick Sweet bbq and would go with something more spicy next time as the overall meal was a bit too sweet for me.

Review: The Prism Society: A Spicy Friends to Lovers Novel

The Prism Society: A Spicy Friends to Lovers Novel The Prism Society: A Spicy Friends to Lovers Novel by Gabi Salas
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

2.5 stars

I received this book for free, this does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review

His eyes held mine in a silent conversation, filled with unsaid words and hushed confessions that had yet to cross our lips. It was as if his stare was whispering secrets his voice couldn't articulate.

The Prism Society tells the story of childhood friends, Emma and Liam, as they separate after Emma leaves town to go to design school in NYC and Liam continues his college in UCLA. The story opens with Emma leaving and while it's clear that two years older Liam has missed Emma at college and there are some feelings there, Emma only sees the diving head first into freedom and women Liam has partaken in after escaping his extremely restrictive parents. While they try to keep in touch through texts and social media, a surprise visit, where Emma sees in real time Liam about to hook-up with a woman, has her running away and slowly distancing herself, they eventually lose touch for three years. But when Liam shows up out of the blue as Emma's about to graduate in NYC, they find that time and growing up has only ignited their chemistry.

It was as if we were picking up right where we left off, but this time, we weren't just teenagers dreaming about what our lives could be. This time, we were adults living our own separate lives, hoping they somehow intersected.

The first half of this started off slower, with a New Adult vibe (Emma is 22yrs old and Liam 24yrs old) and Emma trying to work towards her dream of interior design. Told all from Emma's point-of-view, we get a lot about her worrying about her career. Her college career is skipped through, with her roommate Jessie getting added in as a secondary character and their shared dream of working for the “it” company Spectra. Since Emma talked about how it was her and her mother's shared dream and how close they were, I wish we would have gotten to see more of this relationship, instead of a very quick ending scene between the two. However, Liam comes back into the picture and the two realize they still have those feelings for each other that they were trying to hide before. Since we don't get Liam's pov, his character didn't feel as flushed out to me. You can tell that he has feelings for Emma, but his relationship with his friend and business partner Dominic and why they're working to set-up a club where people can be free to safely and consensually indulge in their chosen physical activities, isn't really delved into; it felt like a wobbly constructed table to get Liam to be able to say “good girl” a couple times.

“I see the beauty in The Prism Society. I see the beauty in what you're trying to create. And I'm sorry that it took me this long to admit that to myself...and to you.”

The conflict comes about because when Emma gets a job at Spectra, she has to sign a non-compete but she just can't help herself with helping Liam design his new club, even coming up with the name. It makes it hard to feel bad for her when it all comes back to bite her, because, she clearly knew she was in the wrong but just kept forging ahead anyway. There's some misplaced blame put on Liam and then Emma deciding a new path for herself that eventually, in the very last few pages, has her getting back with Liam. As far as the “spicy romance” tag, your mileage may vary. I don't consider any and all open door scenes in romance to be “smut”, I actually never use the term, but I know some younger and newer readers to romance have different thoughts on this. Liam is into voyeurism, which is where you could say the steamier scenes come from, there's a handful of them but they're fairly short and, yeah, “good girl” gets thrown around but there wasn't a lot of intimacy to them, more of the by rote “this sounds hot” that gets shared around; closer to a Tessa Bailey and far from a Cherise Sinclair. I did like how Emma and Liam started off open and addressing issues and this did have readability, but I thought the first half showed more care in setting up the story, while the latter half wobbled around and wasn't sturdy enough to deliver a hot engrossing read.

The Roms: Part 7 - Fav Contemp, Hist, and Book of 2023

Usually this only takes me two-three weeks to complete in January, but this year I found myself busy and here we are in February and I'm just finishing up my reminiscing about the books I read in 2023. A hearty thank-you to everyone that stuck around on this longer journey.

Doing this format, instead of just listing my favorite books from the year, I hope shows even more how much I do enjoy and appreciate the stories and characters I read (I can get some flack for daring to rate books below four stars from time to time).

This year I managed to re-shout-out 52 (how did I do the same amount as last year?!?) of the 111 I read.

The following are my Top 12 Contemporary and Historical (I'm reading more fantasy books but not enough to get their own category, so if they feel more historical or contemporary, that's where they go, or if I need to get each category to be the same number, willy-nilly becomes the name of the game, lol. Flowers for the Sea and The Blood Gift are futuristic but I needed one in historical and one in contemporary, so here we are)

*The books eligible could be published in any year, they simply had to be read by me in 2023.

The Gothic tones in this probably did a good job of pushing it to the top. I love a good spooky, mysterious, give me that bonus romance with someone that I think might be trying to kill or kiss me, story. This had all that and some cool little mythology and magic additives. A fun read, especially since I read it in September for those perfect atmospheric vibes.

Flowers for the Sea really wanted to get in here but romance is my first book genre love and well, the romance in this was top tier. Neelo and Talhan were the strong and vulnerable couple that creates that hit you in the heart angst and their particular personalities also delivered on the sweet and steamy. The fantasy world-building only added to the creation of an amazing story. The only thing I hate is that I do you think you have to at least read the book before this one to be able to jump into this world, I wish I could recommend it on it's own but trust me, it's worth it to read the before in series to get to this one.

 The Roms

Favorite Couple

*The books eligible could be published in any year, they simply had to be read by me in 2023. Clicking on book cover brings you to my review

Nominees:

1.  Cordelia and Hartford - The Book of True Desires by Betina Krahn

With a hostile gleam in her eye she stepped in front of him, hiked her skirts above her knee, and propped her stocking-clad leg against the corner of the building, blocking his way. Under his widening eyes, she removed a small revolver from the holster strapped to her thigh and inspected the chambers. As she lowered her leg and her skirts fell back into place, she heard him suck two partial breaths in quick succession. "You'd better stay behind me," she ordered, giving him an incendiary glance while stroking the gun's trigger with her finger. "Oh, and in case you get shot," she said with vengeful earnestness, "you better tell me where you keep our money."

I've already used this quote for Best Scene, but I don't care! I loved how this shows their dynamic and starts off the sparking between them. I loved the byplay between these two and how the female lead character's competence at first befuddled the male lead character but then lead to his attraction towards her.

2.  Merry and Shane - Too Hot to Handle by Victoria Dahl

“You’re cute when you laugh,” he said, which was true enough, but not the whole story. Her smile made him happy, but he couldn’t say that. Ever.

Merry was the nerdy good girl and Shane the from the wrong side of the tracks but they kind of get thrown together and their chemistry was amazing. I mean, it's Dahl, so you get all those sexy steamy scenes and dollops of deeper emotions.

3.  Gareth and Josiah - The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen by K.J. Charles

“I missed you so much.” It was a whisper.

Oof, these two. Circumstances line up to have them against each other but that darn attraction! It's a quieter story that delivered deep emotions between these two, hurt, pain, and love and you'll feel them all.

4.  Lindsay and Catlin - Tell Me No Lies by Elizabeth Lowell

"If she is hurt, most honorable Chen Yi, you will wish that you had not gone fishing with a dragon."

I don't even know where to start with this one, just know lies and deceit swirl all around and in-between this couple while Catlin is trying to protect Lindsay from all sides as she tries to help the government. Lindsay is the "innocent" one but she has that grit along with her vulnerability I love from female main characters and Catlin is the one who gets a little thrown for loop. The intimacy that built between these two, with all those little touches, was top notch and I wish newer published romances would bring this back.

5.  Harlow and Ben - The Haunted Hacienda by J.C. Cervantes

With a half sigh, half groan, he presses his forehead to mine. “Truth?”
I nod.
“I think I’m in a lot of trouble.”

A story that surprised me with more romance in that I thought it would have, I loved their shy approaching each other and flirty interactions, made them feel cute and sparking.

6.  Manuela and Cora - The Island Princess Starts a Scandal by Adriana Herrera

That was the precise moment it dawned on Cora with unequivocal certainty that Manuela Caceres Galvan could wreak absolute havoc on her life.

These two have a steamy first meeting that lead to a passionate and sensual building relationship that also connected them through their struggles with being women in their time period. This couple was fierce and sexy.

7.  Violetta and Bertrice - Mrs. Martin's Incomparable Adventure by Courtney Milan

“They've had seventy-five years to defeat you,” Violetta said, turning to her. Her eyes were wide and dark, and she was almost certainly the dearest thing that Bertrice had seen in years. “What do you think it means that they've yet to accomplish it?”

A budding friendship that lead to a building romance as the two concoct schemes to get back at a Terrible Nephew. Their shared and contrasting life experiences bonded these two and helped create a sweet romance that had me smiling and feeling so good that these two found each other.

8.  Neelo and Talhan - The Evergreen Heir by A.K. Mulford

"You fit so well in the Southern Court." Neelo frowned, walking off at full speed, uncaring of Talhan followed. "Everything is just fun and games with you all, isn't it?"
"Not everything." Talhan easily fell into stride, his long legs eating up the distance between them. "There are some things I take seriously. My oaths and duties, protecting my friends, keeping my promises."
"Don't make any promises to me, then."
"I already have," Talhan murmured, "you just don't know about them yet."

I loved these two! Neelo was the shy, keep themselves, convinced no one could love them for who they were and Talhan was the popular fey warrior who fell in love with Neelo as kids and just steadily and calmly, showed them that they were there for Neelo and loved them just as they were. A lot of underlining emotion between these two that hit all those angsty, sweet, and sexy points.

9.  August and Keaton - Confessions of a Canine Drama Queen by Stefanie London

“I'm not your type, huh?” He walked over and leaned a hand on the kitchen counter, crowding August against the cabinets.
She tipped her face up to his and looked him right in the eye. “Not if you were the last man on earth, Keaton Sax.”

I think it's pretty well established I'm a sucker for the bestfriend's older brother connection/trope, well here it is and with added unfinished business! Really, Keaton was so sweet, August was a bit of a mess, they both have some emotional issues, and a mouthy Huskie, I was goo for these two's chemistry. They had a "are we flirting" fun sparing relationship that was live wire, fun, and sweet.

10.  Morag and Gregor - The Summer Skies by Jenny Colgan

A place to which I belonged utterly; a place where I could breathe.

A romance that I can't say was exactly front and center but their less than friendly beginning led to such a fun, dry humor building relationship that I ended up really enjoying their byplay. A cute couple, with goats!

11.  Verity and Magnus - It Had to be a Duke by Vivienne Lorret

It was just that, somewhere along the way, she had stopped hating him quite so much. And all this not hating him was making her heart ache.

A fake betrothal that lead to a light angst, fun back and forth couple. They had amusing chemistry with Verity driving Magnus mad in the best ways. I liked how their banter slowly broke Magnus down and they also delivered with sweet and steamy with Verity discovers some of Magnus' keepsakes and a desk is nearby.

Winner:

Neelo and Talhan

“You are mischief, Neelo Emberspear, and I love it. No one else gets to see it: the boat-commandeering, book-stealing mischief-maker you are. But that's who you've always been around me and you never have to change.” His footsteps didn't pause as if he was just casually chatting, but his words made Neelo feel like they were free-falling. They were mischief...and he loved it. There was something about them that Talhan Catullus loved.

I could quote these two all day. So, yeah, when I said I loved these two, I meant I LOVED these two. That whole, seeing the other person for who they really are and loving them all the more for it. Bonus fey warrior loving the shy heir and helping them gain confidence in themselves and their already there abilities through strong, steady love.
