Oh, how I loved this series, way back when; I reviewed the first five, but read them religiously for the first...twelve I think? The thing is, if you don't buy on the premise as explained in the first, I don't think you can quite jump into it in later books and get the same enjoyment.
I am sad that she's no longer writing (her website was last updated five years ago, I hope she's okay), because I would be curious what she would do in other worlds.
It took me an absurd amount of time to figure out wtf was going on. I thought it was like ancient Celtic magical realism world only to be whiplashed with futuristic scifi. I did like the cat, Greyuk?, but the worldbuilding/setting is so HUGE here, you've got to get the foundation for it. Definitely different and interesting, so with you on wishing she had continued writing.
